Respirometers are testing devices to assess properties of materials or optimize bioprocess parameters. They are mainly of 4 distinct types, depending on the measured parameters:
A) CO2 in the headspace,
B) O2 in the liquid phase,
C) pressure in the headspace,
D) volumes and flow rates of gas.
CO2 (A) and O2 (B) respirometers are typically applied to aerobic processes, maintained as such by continuous or intermittent aeration. Differently, respirometers C and D can be applied to both aerobic (O2 consumption), fermentative processes (CO2 production, H2 productions) and biogas production (CH4 and CO2 production).

IDEA is the only company that has developed all the 4 technologies to provide unconditional advice depending on the test the user needs to carry out.
The choice of the respirometer must be made based on the application, the requirement to follow an ISO standard and the user's confidence in a specific technology.

The SOIL respirometer has been developed for the determination of soil microbial respiration of aerobic, unsaturated soils.
We supply 4 different configurations:
Systems measuring CO2 do not distinguish between CO2 released from microbial activities and CO2 resulting from abiotic processes. For alkaline soils and soils with a high organic matter content, which can release considerable amounts of abiotically CO2, methods using O2 uptake are recommended.
